20 down, 20 to go

Today marked 20 weeks in my pregnancy, which means I am half way done or have half more to go, depending on how you look at it. I had my 20 week sonogram today and the baby seems to be developing wonderfully. We got so see feet, hands, and all of the important heart, kidney, and brain functions too. It’s always a relief to find out that the baby is healthy. As for the gender, well, it’s sealed in an envelope sitting on my desk, staring at me.  I didn’t want to find out what we were having but John D. did, so as a compromise we sealed the information up not to be opened until Christmas morning. The suspense is now killing me.

Halloween recap

It was a super fun and super busy weekend for us. Saturday was Walker’s 9th birthday party, his actual birthday is today, but his party was on Halloween, which was Halloween themed (of course) with all the guests dressing up in their costumes.  After Walker’s party we came home and got ready to have our friends, the Roossiens, over to our house for pizza before hitting the streets for candy. Barrett was beyond excited to go trick or treating but not so much to get dressed up. We finally managed to get him in his costume minus the mask and cape. Evie happily wore her ballerina costume and took to the whole concept of trick or treating very fast. It’s amazing how fast kids can learn when candy is involved. Needless to say, the kids (and adults) had a very good time on Halloween.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Happy Birthday, Walker!!!
Evie the ballerina
And Batman
For those of you who are dedicated blog readers, you may remember seeing John D.’s
mariachi costume before…
An unlikely duo
Evie’s all ready to go
And we’re off!
Batman on a mission

And finally, the loot

Where have we been?

At long last, I find the time to blog. It’s been a ridiculous past couple of weeks with everyone except Evie getting what seems to be the swine flu. Barrett’s turned into a double ear infection and bronchitis, I turned out with bronchitis as well but happily we are all better now, finally.  Besides being sick, we’ve managed to have some fun, too.  A couple of weeks ago, Barrett got to go see Thomas the Train with Aunt Dena and me. It was a rainy, cold day but we all had fun, especially Barrett.  Last weekend was jam-packed fun with Walker’s elementary school carnival and our church carnival. We also made it to the pumpkin patch and carved pumpkins. Barrett is super excited about Halloween. He will be Batman, Walker is going to be Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Evie will be a ballerina.  On Tuesday, I celebrated my 29th birthday. It was a really fun day that ended with dinner at a nice restaurant with John D.  I can’t believe next year I will turning 30 but I have a whole year to get used to that.

Here are some pictures from the last few weeks.

On Thomas with our tickets. Needless to say, Barrett was in heaven.
Having fun with Aunt Dena.
Boo with his Jr. engineer certificate
It was cold, Barrett was under-dressed (because it’s never cold and rainy in October
in Austin) but he braved the weather for a photo with Thomas.
For the Casis Carnival, there is a cake walk contest. Walker wanted to
enter the contest but so Barrett wouldn’t feel left out, he got to decorate
his own cake. It truly is a work of art.
Here’s Walker’s creation. I thought it should have won.
Our annual trip to the pumpkin patch…oh what fun!
This picture is just plain silly. It was cold in the morning but hot in the afternoon, so
the kids stripped off their sweatshirts and swang toppless. This also shows our new swingset,
which is an early Christmas present to the kids.
The weather was great on Saturday evening so we took the little ones down to the
lake to feed the ducks. (Walker was at a friend’s house for a sleep-over).
..
Like Barrett at this age, Evie didn’t understand that this water wasn’t for swimming.
But she still had fun.
Now onto pumpkin carving. Barrett did not like pulling out the seeds. Fortunatly, Walker did.
And our finished jack o’ lanterns

fun in the fountains

Last week we had a spell of gorgeous weather and so I felt compelled to gather the kids and take them to the fountains at Zilker Park. Most water features in public parks are off limits to kids or anyone for that matter, but these fountains are designed with the purpose of playing. It’s not far from our house but just far enough that we don’t go often; which made this outing a very special treat for Evie and Barrett, who had a bundle of fun.

the fountians even have shallow bubbling reflection pools that the kids love to
play in.
The kids would wait and wait, staring right in the hole until the water blasted them in the face. Funny to watch
and yet somehow fun for them.
And finally, a trip up the observation hill, which has a great view of the city.

A cautionary tale

There once was a man who was invited to go on a men’s mountain biking trip. Being a naturally good athlete, the man agreed, even though he had little experience on an actual mountain bike. It was great to get away and drive across Texas, relaxing and enjoying being neither father nor lawyer, everyone needs a break, after all.  Upon the biker’s arrival to their destination they found rain. And rain it did. It rained all night and the next morning too. But by golly, the men had driven over 10 hours and they were going to get on their bikes. Things were going well for all four bikers but the rain made the trails treacherous even for an experienced rider, not to mention a beginner.  Not two hours into their ride did our hero fall. And not just fall, he flew over the handle bars, wedging the brake handle deep into his thigh, leaving a 3/4 inch puncture wound and incredible bruising and swelling for which would take literally weeks to heal. The man’s vacation was ruined, spending the rest of it in the emergency room or laid-up in bed. So much for a get-away.  The man’s name is John D. Holmes and this is a true story.  And as for the moral of our tale? Well, I’ll let you decide your take-away.

*Pictures may not be suitable for all audiences, like those of you who are snacking right now*

This is what his leg looked like about 5 days after the accident. His whole left leg, front to back, hip to calf,
is now a big purple bruise such that it almost doesn’t look real.
Okay, but beyond my husband’s biking injury, we are all doing well.  Evie spent Friday night with Oma and Pops so John D. and I could take the boys to see, "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 3D" which was great fun for all. Cute movie too, if you haven’t seen it yet.  I will leave you on a slightly lighter and much cuter note, Evie: Incognito.
Do you think mommy will recognize me?

Things are very busy around here now that we are truly into the school year. Evie started gymnastics last week and loves it. she is amazingly strong and her gymnastic abilities are impressive for the age of one.
Barrett loves going to school four days a week and will start occupational therapy next week for his strong aversion to eating fruits and veggies. I am excited and hopeful for some changes in his diet. Anyone who knows me, knows that it’s down-right painful for me to have a child that will only eat meat and dairy.
Walker is busy, busy, with his violin lessons, school, karate and bear scouts. His first meeting as a bear scout is today where his den will be mentoring the newest cub scouts on their scouting pledge, etc. Since Walker loves to teach/instruct, I think Walker will really enjoy this meeting.
On Monday I had a first screen, where the baby is tested via sonogram and blood tests (mine) for any birth defects. We don’t have the final results yet, but the doctor said everything is looking great thus far. Which, needless to say, is just wonderful news.
Below are a couple of pictures from Evie and Boo Boo’s first day of school.

Yay for school!

We have a bit of news

Can you guess what it is? Most of you, dear readers, will not be surprised at all when I tell you that I’m currently 12 weeks pregnant with baby number 4. That’s right, baby number 4. Due about March 25th, Baby number 4 (as we lovingly call him as we yet to have settled on a name boy or girl) will arrive and complete our family. I say "complete" because if I have any say in it, this is my last such foray into soul-bearing. Anyway, we are very excited (and a little scared) to add yet another love to our home. Six is a good round number, don’t you think?

Evie’s big week

Our week was really dominated by our little pumpkin turning one. But I couldn’t think of a better way to spend it. Happy Birthday, Evie!!

This is Evie’s very own kitchen. She (and Barrett) love it. A big high-five to my darling
husband for putting the thing together; it was not an easy task.
Here at the Holmes house, on your birthday, you get presents before breakfast. From
the looks of this picture, it should have been the other way around for Evie.
On Evie’s actual birthday, we had a small little celebration with just the 5 of us and some
cupcakes. Evie was a fan of hers.
Happy Birthday, Evie!!
You lookin’ at me?
Yup, it’s all the way up in her hair. Cake was literally everywhere.
Saturday we had a big party for Evie. She got all dolled up in her little
tutu dress and looked like a little princess.
Oma and Evie
Pops and Evie
Evie and her godmother, Carisa
Aunt Dena and Evie waiting for the cake
yay! cake!
You can argue that a one-year-old doesn’t really know that the fuss is all about
them for a first birthday party, but when we all started to sing happy birthday to Evie,
she knew it was all for her and she was so happy.
more cake, but less sure about it than last time
Exhibit A: Sugar high
Exhibit B: The crash
..
The next day, the boys helped Evie open presents, a perk of being big brothers.
but Evie figured it out pretty quickly and decided she didn’t need their help anymore.
Oh, Evie.

Since my last post we have started to say good-bye to summer (thank goodness!). The heat is still very much with us but signs of fall are here. Walker started his 3rd grade year on Monday. He is very excited to get back into school and seems to really like his teacher. In years past, Walker has been in fall soccer, but this year he has decided to take a different extracurricular approach by taking karate and violin lessons. He will be busy indeed, but I think his year is shaping up great.

In other school news, Barrett AND Evie start "school" next week. It’s actually a mother’s-day-out program, Barrett’s been in it since he was Evie’s age, but now both little ones will be at TCC. Barrett will go four mornings a week and Evie two. Barrett loves school and I’m sure Evie will too. And you might guess that I like them being in school, too. Don’t get me wrong, I adore my babies but I like my free time too:-)

In other news, tomorrow is our sweet Evie’s first birthday! Someone asked me if I could believe she was turning one already and I said yes, only because she walks, runs and climbs like a 2-year-old. But actually her first year has gone incredibly fast, which is a little sad, but only a little.

In honor of Evie’s big day, I present you: The many faces of Evie

Giving me they "eye". I think I caught her trying to do something she wasn’t supposed
to.
The question of every day, "Evie, Honey, what’s in your mouth?" Sometimes, like above,
she’ll prove she’s got nothing to hide.
A cute picture of Evie but also a very telling photo. You may ask, "where are the sofa
cushions?" well, I had to remove them because Evie feels that the sofa is a jungle
gym and with concrete floors, it’s just not safe. Safer, yes. Attractive, no.
Proving she’s big enough to push her big brother around a little, in a toy car, that is.
the jungle gym, I mean, the sofa

blaming it on the heat, part 2 and possibly my longest post yet

I’m going to go ahead and blame my laziness on the heat again since I think it’s been a month since my last post (in case you were wondering it’s 40+ consecutive days over 100 degrees here in Austin). Luckily we were able to escape the heat and take our annual summer family trip to Iowa. We all had a great time visiting family and friends and also enjoyed the cool weather immensily. Thanks to all of our Iowan friends who drove, hosted, and doted on us while we were there!

One of the first things we did was go to the Radcliffe Days parade. As you can see,
the boys made out well.
The boys had a blast, I think it was Barrett’s first parade experience. I even got to meet
up with my good ‘ol bud, Stephanie Cathcart and her family.
….
Fast friends: Jaxson Cathcart and Barrett
The loud sounds of the parade where a bit much for Evie. She opted to sleep on Daddy’s shoulder after a
quiet walk away from the festivities.
The next day was the Hadley family reunion, which was fun too. Dad brought the kayaks for
some post-lunch entertainment. Here, Mom is taking Heidi Brinkmeyer’s son, Ben, for a spin.
John D. and Walker
Boo Boo waiting (im)patiently for his turn
Boo Boo finally gets his turn with GaGa.
I get confused with how this goes, but these cutie-pies are my first cousin, Heidi’s kids (three of the six).
Which I think makes them my kids’ second cousins. Anyway, they are all precious. Pictured are Annabelle (8), Jack (3)
and Maggie (almost 2).
Barrett even got to go on a short pony ride.
I think the next event on our itinerary was to head to Boone to ride the (steam/disel?) train.
Both Barrett and Walker loved it. It was fun for me becuase my grandparents took us kids when we were small.
Surprisingly, it hadn’t changed one bit.
Boo Boo was even able to meet the conductor.
One happy Barrett
Moving on to other modes of transportation, the boys also got a ride on my parent’s neighbor’s
huge tractor.
Later the boys went for a few rides on the antique carousel in Story City. (Notice a theme?)
Riding the pigs…only in Iowa
We bought the boys souvenir Viking hats from the carousel, they like them but Evie loves them even more.
Barrett loves animals so he was excited to get to play with pet little fawn (which another one of
my parent’s neighbors pets).
Three Leerberg generations
One of our last adventures in Iowa was to take the kids to Rieman Gardens in Ames.
I think the best part was the butterfly exhibit. The kids loved it.
Our little observant Evie found the butterflies very interesting
Evie had a little hitch-hiker friend. He liked her green hoodie, and stayed there for quite awhile.
Gramma Jayne, Barrett, Evie and Great Grandma Mavis at Reiman Gardens
The Hadley women had a small gathering at my Aunt Jeanie’s house along with all of the kids. How many do you count? If  you said 10, you’re right! And that’s not including Walker (who had to go back to Austin) and the new one on the way for my Aunt Nancy who is due in November. Needless to say, they all had a blast playing together.
Luckily, my BF’s since childhood, Stephanie and Jill and I were able to get together for an afternoon. Of course we had
a great time and so did Jaxson and Barrett who are nearly the same age.
Jilly and Evie
I don’t remember why they were doing this, but Jaxson and Barrett thought it was hilarious.
This is Barrett and Maddie Dewhurst which is my old bud, Laura (Below) Dewhurst’s daughter.
I hadn’t seen Laura in probably a decade, but she made the trip up to the farm one afternoon. We had fun catching up
on the past while her two and my two played wonderfully in anything dirty. But that’s the beauty of the farm.
